Oh yeah, I knew that question was a coming. I think it was like my second wave, I saw it coming in and asked that sponger next to me if he was on it. He said no no go go !!! Well after everybody who was on beach and in water yelling and screaming go go !! And you where there I know videoing, so shit, had to go. And I am not one to let a wave like that go by, so I went. I scratched and scratched to get into it. Right before I got to my feet, it jacked up. By the time I got to my feet, I knew I was screwed. So I jumped off my board. If you watch it in slow mo I fell right into the trough. It is funny, watching it in slow mo, that is how it felt, like I was falling forever in slow motion. So it actually pushed me through the back, thats why I popped up laughing. It did actually knock the wind out of me. So yeah, thats what happened.

The state championships are the culmination of the regional Hard Rock Cafe Surf Series and determine Hawaii's team that will compete in the US National Championships in California next month. The HSA has been delivering champions for over 40 years, including some of the most famous names in surfing: Derek and Michael Ho, Eddie and Clyde Aikau, Gerry Lopez, Tony Moniz, Andy and Bruce Irons, and the list still grows today. Ala Moana pulsed with surf in the two- to four-foot range over the three days of the state titles, with thousands of waves ridden by the best boardriders from around the Hawaiian Islands. The younger divisions are the biggest attraction, drawing the lions share of attention as they offer a window onto the stars of tomorrow. In particular, the 16-17 year age group features Hawaii's top talent that is on the verge of entering the professional ranks of the ASP world tour. JFA had a little bowl bash at Punkers over the weekend. They filmed a video for one of the songs on there soon to be released album. The song is Danny Sargeant's trucks. Needless to say, a lot of grinds were layed down. Plenty of rippers and lurkers were in attendence. This little get together was two fold. Get the video done and more importantly, it was a send off skate party for Brian Brannon. Brian is getting shipped off to Afganistan to do his duty. Bless you my friend. Be safe. Here's some pix from the day.

Newport Beach Lifestyle Brand Burgeons in Down Economy

Southern California lifestyle label Factor54 (F54) announced today a license agreement with apparel manufacturer Advance Sports Inc. Advanced Sports will design, produce, sell and distribute F54 products globally under a multi-year contract.

F54, while deferring its design, production and sales role, is reserving sole equity interest in the business and will continue operation of its offices in Orange County, Calif., in a creative and marketing capacity, ensuring the brand's integrity as it expands its product collections and distribution domestically and internationally.

"Our deal with Advanced Sports affords us world-class manufacturing and distribution competency along with resources that will better enable F54 to grow," says Todd Miller, F54 president and CEO. "We're excited to be able to concentrate our efforts on building our brand appropriately, while broadening our apparel offering and exploring cool new product assortments in complementary other categories. We get to do what we do better, smarter, and scaled-up to meet growing consumer demand with quality and unerring service."

F54 produces a select array of men's and women's graphic t-shirts, and men's pants, button-downs, walk shorts, swim wear, head wear and athletic socks. The company expanded its line in fall 2010 to include a broader assortment of its action sports-inspired staples, with additional development in the way of men's and women's wovens, outerwear and accessories.

"It's encouraging in this challenged economy to find a true core brand that is growing and thriving at retail, and we're really excited about this opportunity," says Brian Jellig, Advance Sports brand director. "The demand for F54 is proven in top specialty accounts, and we are looking to help the brand add more depth and technical styles to collections, capitalizing on that demand.

"The new fall/holiday line we developed with Todd and his team is in the market with the new rep force, and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.Â The general sentiment from shops seems to be,'Finally, we've been waiting to see this happen!' Young brand Factor54 has signed a licensing agreement with Advance Sport Inc.

Advance Sports will handle design, production, sales and distribution for the brand globally.

F54 will retain sole equity interest in the business and will work on marketing and creative.

I asked F54 founder Todd Miller about the deal.

Why did you decide to take the license route?

It enables us to go to the next level in our business. Overall, we were selling-in and selling through at retail much faster than we were prepared to handle from a manufacturing and distribution perspective. We literally could not get product produced quickly enough.

The bigger challenge was meeting demand for a deeper, properly merchandised line. We were pretty much an items business -- mainly printables, board shorts, hats, socks ... the basics ... and our bigger accounts were requiring a broader and deeper assortment than we were tooled to produce.

So we looked at a number of options, and a healthy licensing solution was clearly the best choice.

Is Ted Wueste still involved in the company?

Yes, Ted is still with the business as an equity partner; however, he is not involved in day-to-day operational matters.

I haven't seen much of Factor54 in local surf shops lately. Did you have enough resources to produce goods?

It's a classic case of "be careful what you ask for, because you might get it."

It took us six years to become an overnight success. We were blowing up, we were a hot brand, but we didn't have the product to supply the demand.

We literally could not make ship dates because orders were too big and required quicker turnarounds than we were prepared to handle.

More important, the brand grew bigger than the product line. That is to say, we were still an items business, and retailers were demanding properly merchandised lines and broader categories.

We needed to turn what was basically a garage operation into a real operating apparel business, or we were going to choke on the paper retailers were giving us.

Instead of attempting a scale-up on the fly, which would have been madness and would have taxed us financially and mentally, we pulled the reigns on the business as it was leaping, and took a moment to compose ourselves.

We realized it was more important for us to grow in a sustainable and healthy way than to be reactionary and frantic.

We were lucky to find a licensor that found F54 complimentary to its business, and which shored-up some holes in its retail channels. They loved the brand, they were excited about it, and it was apparent that offloading the manufacturing, sales and distribution to a business with infrastructure and great experience was the solution to our challenges.

They can keep up with the operational demands, and we can manage the brand... a perfect relationship.

What are some of your top accounts now?

We're still supporting the same specialty surf and skate businesses: Jack's, Frog House, ET, Zumiez, Skatepark of Tampa.

Will the vibe of the brand, which I remember somewhat skate oriented, remain in the new arrangement?

We're not changing our brand identity or marketing focus whatsoever. We are expanding our vibe to a geographically broader set of the same type. Specialty skate and surf is what we are.

I wouldn't know how to be anything else, and I wouldn't want to be anything else. Thankfully, our customers dig us that way.

Why did you choose Advance Sports Inc.? What other action sports brands are they involved in?

They do stuff for Body Glove, Jet Pilot, some other big brands. We chose them because of two things: ability and enthusiasm.

They were really excited about slotting a core skate and surf brand into their stable, they liked what we were about, and we were impressed by their capabilities and coolness.

Are you relieved to have the operational support?

More than I can tell you.

Factor54 gets to realize its full potential now, and we get to keep all of our interest in the business. It's a great balance of talents, and everyone gets to do what he/she does best.

The Western Surfing Association Gatordade Championship Tour returned to Salt Creek last weekend for the 8th event of the season. Salt Creek has never disappointed and this year was no exception. Glassy surf in the head high range greeted over 400 competitors this weekend. They made the best of the amazing conditions with numerous barrels and lip launches in the perfect, punchy conditions.

Volcom Stones Pufferfish Surf Series Maile Point, Oahu The third stop of the Pufferfish Surf Series went off on Sunday, January 17th 2010! El Nino season is in full effect and we already had high hopes for some fun waves at Maile Pt. As we hoped, we arrived to perfect 4 to 6 ft hundred yard long lefts. Without a doubt this would be the best waves in years we have had for a Pufferfish. As usual, the Groms were on point and ready to go. In the first heat of the day Kaoli Kahukalo got barreled on a left set. He ended up earning fifty bucks for the Electric Volt Thrower for doing a sick frontside air. Kaoli also made the final, but ended up getting 2nd in a stacked heat. Young Kai Matsumoto ended up winning and walking away with a huge Volcom bag full of goods. Eala Stewart was solid all day and came away with a very impressive 3rd place finish over Austin Vicente, Seth Moniz and Josh Moniz. The Juniors were not short of talent with Kylen Tamakawa coming out on top over Gavin Klein who made his way over from Kauai. Last years winner Eli Olson just missed out on the win again, but got a qualifying spot for the VQS World Champs. EJ Mitsui,Chase Suzuki,and Jordan Breuggemann rounded out the Juniors final. In the Girls division it was young Mahina Maeda charging the overhead lefts all day. She threw down huge scores in early heats and backed it up by coming out on top in a stacked final. Bailey Nagy had a solid finish and earned 2nd over Hana Harrisson, Missy Valdez, Maile Brannigan and Malia Mizuno rounded out the final. Jonah Morgan has been on fire lately, and he proved it by winning every heat he surfed, including the final. It was the highest stacked Pro-Am that the Pufferfish has seen yet. The field included 6x triple crown winner and former world champ Sunny Garcia, who was posting 10â€™s in the early rounds, but pulled out before the repo. Nick Mita got the spot Sunny gave up and ended up winning the stacked repo against the likes of Ola Eleogram, Gavin Gillette and Jose Maria Cabrerra from the Canary Islands who also posted a 10 in the repo and didnâ€™t make it. Barak Maor made it and got 2nd to Jonah Morgan by less than a point. Nick Mita got third over Ola Eleogram, Brazil's Marcello Trekhino, who did a huge backside air in the quarters,and former National champ Kekoa Cazimero. Over all it was amazing day full of surfing, wheel barrel races, and Teri burgers on the grill. Everyone was super stoked and thankful to VOLCOM once again. By: Nick Lipton - Dew Tour drenching tropical rains forced todayâ€™s Skate Park prelim back three hours. But this is Orlando, home of family adventure and fun, and the crowds came back for the prelim in spite of the slight rescheduling. Under the lights and through some heavy humidity, the skaters sweated out the 2009 Dew Tour's last prelim, with Greg Lutzka coming out on top.

The prelim was split into six grossly humid heats, and each skater drenched a shirt or two while putting their best down for the judges. The three to get things started were Kurtis Colamonico, who had a bruised heel, Christian Sereika, and the Gatorade Free Flow Tour winner Jack Olson. Little Jack is only 15, but skated like a grown man, flipping onto and out of rails. Kickflip frontboard, shuv boardslides, five-0 180 outâ€“the little man from Minnesota put on a nice show. Christian had a move or two for the crowd as well, putting a whole lot of tweak into some lofty grabs over the hefty gap. Kurtis Colamonico, bruised heel and all, probably landed every blunt possibility there is during his time on course, but sadly none of these guys made the finals.

Heat Two had Milton Martinez and Jordan Hoffart, who both decided to let it all hang out and go for broke. That style worked, as both made the finals. Milton freaking destroyed the stair set, landing both a back 180 and kickflip down the stairs, before landing bolts on a video-game-like backside big spin. Milton also flipped into and out of some rails and ended on a huge kickflip over the gap and into the ramp usually reserved for take-offs. It was impressive. The buffest dude on tour, Jordan Hoffart, came out to skate as well. He flipped and slid everything, showed his leg strength with a frontside flip over the fire hydrant, and somehow landed a 50-50 ollie-out over the death gap. Fabrizio Santos was also in this round, and back 360â€™d up the death gap. Chad Bartie had a rad gap to backtail into a bank too.

The third heat had a great introduction: Lutzka and Danny Fuenzalida threw back to back bangers up the death gap and into the bank. Lutzkaâ€™s trick was a huge front 360 and Dannyâ€™s was a perfect back 180. Lutzka continued to put on a show with his classically cool style and neat little hat. Lutzka had the kickflip frontboards, the lofty gap tricks, and the best frontside flip of the day. Also in the third heat was Wagner Ramosâ€“the guy cut his dreads off and picked up a mean back blunt. Danny Fuenzalida landed a big nollie flip down the set, and Dew Tour newcomer Jani Laitiala got really sweaty.

Poor Carlos De Andrade, he was unfortunately the man on the wrong side of the right line and wonâ€™t be seeing the finals. Carlos did manage to 360 flip the hydrant and back 180 the stair set though. But there was plenty of good news from Heat Four too: Timmy Knuth, the Floridian local, and Chris Mendes both placed high enough to make the Finals. 18 year-old Timmy has been killing it this summer, and for the record, he has one of the best 360 flips in skateboarding. Timmy got his 5th place spot with kickflip this and thatâ€™s into the handrail, and an honestly massive 360 flip up and over the death gap into the bank. Timmy was looking like a beast until he showed me that his fingers had pruned due to excessive sweating, after that he just looked gross.

I wonder if people scream and cheer for P-Rod everywhere he goes, or just at Dew Tour? Either way he won Heat Five and secured a spot in the Finals. Huge kickflips, scary switch skills, and an unmatched style got Paul his finals spot. He didnâ€™t seem pleased with his skating, but the switch backlip, switch feeble, switch kickflip, and 180 five-0 he put down made it hard to feel bad for him. Austen Seaholm also came out of the heat to place in the finals, and while Iâ€™d love to tell you what he did, itâ€™s kind of impossible, heâ€™s just too technical. At one point Austen shot over the death gap and salflip somethingâ€™d, he did a backfoot kickflip at one point, spun some 270â€™s out of the rails, fingerflip manualed the box after gapping onto it, and generally just destroyed stuff. Tyler Hendley and Tulio Oliveira also skated alongside Paul and Austen, and both had a good banger or two. Tyler had an amazing gap to 50-50 on something not built to be skated, and Tulio kickflipped into a bunch of grinds.

After a bunch of t-shirts were soaked through, and the crowd had begun to sweat from simply sitting outside in Orlando, Heat Six began. Rodolfo Ramos, Danilo Do Rosario, and Dave Bachinsky ended the night. Both Rodolfo and Danilo snagged spots in the Final, but Bachinsky missed out, which is too bad, because he is always a fun one to watch. Dave is a lip trick technician, he frontisde flip rock nâ€™ rolled the quarter and put a blunt frontside flip out down on a street barrierâ€“not easy stuff. Also not doing easy stuff was Rodolfo, because the Brazilian hasnâ€™t learned the word mellow yet. Rodolfo skates fast, and is relentless about getting his tricks. The 180 nose slam on the handrail, fly out on the barrier, and huge hardflip were evidence of Rodolfoâ€™s intensity. Danilo Do Rosario, another Brazilian, finished in third, and made all the older Brazilians very proud. Danillo skated the best he has all summer: backtails, kickflip 50-50â€™s, nollie tricks, and some mean stuff up the death gap and into the bank sealed his first trip to the Finals this year.

On Saturday, the top nine skaters will join Chris Cole, Chaz Ortiz, and Ryan Decenzo to battle it out for the Dew Tour Cup. A lot of people are thinking that Chris Cole has it in the bag, and I'm inclined to believe the hype, considering that when asked about Chris Cole P-Rod only responded with one word, â€œChamp.â€

Sun Diego, Vans shoes, and Monster energy drinks present the AM SLAM contest series. The first stop was the Clairemont, California YMCA. There was a great turn out with packed heats in 13 and under and the Pro-Am Open division. With 1,000 dollars total prize purse up for grabs in the Pro-Am Open division, the heat was on. Oddly enough David Cobb was killing it but had to leave before his second run and fell out of contention for the win. In the end, it was Diego Najera who took home the first place and $500. TransWorld gave away a prize pack for the â€œTrick of the Dayâ€ to Derek Elmendorf. Check out the results below the video. The next stop will be the Encinitas YMCA on October 24th. Mike " Darkness " Barnes Checks In With F54

F54's Mike Barnes, or " Darkness " has checked in with us to tell us what he has been up since his trip out here to California. Sounds like he had a hell of a summer, as darkness always does. He sent some photos along with his story. You will laugh your ass off. Enjoy !!!

Hey Todd, Ted and Lippy ! Yeah i am back in florida got hurt a few weeks ago along my travels to the northwest, and now I actually have a minute on the computer ha ha! But yeah, it started like most trips for me absolutelyÂ confused, where am i gonna stay, who's picking me up from the airport, all that good stuff right ? But luckily most my friends from Bacon Skateboards live right there in Portland so next thing I know i am right off the plane straight to a 12ft.deep bowl with like some 30ft.full pipe(pier park) not your typical leg warmer spot but we had a blast Next couple days just explored some more killer spots, till the trisect. The trisect is supposed to be a three day event (3 contest 3 days) but do to some permits or what not, the first one was cancelled (which would have been the best one), so now being the bi-fecta we skated we partied and like most lame contests, but still found good-times 4 sure! So after all the hoopla it was back to straight up concrete mission I would start naming parks, but there was just to many and no matter how rad they were, the only name that matters is BURNSIDE !! yup u heard me mouth f%#%ing ! Burnside the first and still the best built, by the skaters & shredded by the skaters that started it naturally. So me, being the lurker I am, thats were I spent most my time under the bridge! On any given day some of the best skaters in the world were rollin thru. Also just the widest variety off skaters I ever seen. Soooo sick! I even ran into my FL homie Timmy Knuth at the park. I guess he was doing the Dew or something (Dew Tour) so ripped with the ol'boy for a bit. It was cool to see him out of his element and still holding it down. Now this was about the time of the trip when I started sleeping in the Bacon warehouse, which was pretty sweet . After another 2 weeks of exploring the Great Gnar Wes, andÂ with a hip the size of a volleyball ( that is my injury, still don't know what I did ) and an empty walletÂ it was time to head home to the hot humid swamps of Florida. But shit, till next time thanx Oregon for the memories and thank u Todd, Ted and everyone at the Factor 54 family for helping make that dream trip possible ! !

Well he did again. F54's Bobby Okvist entered a contest, The City Of Newport Beach Surf Contest, and won the thing !! The waves were running around 4 to 5 foot and maybe some bigger sneaker sets. Attached is some pics and a interview with Bobby regarding the contest and other info on him.

The waves were fun. Walled but the jetty was creating some great lined up lefts with a couple barrels.

2) I saw you with two boards, tell us about them.

I had a 5â€™11 cordell epoxy and another that was 5â€™10 poly with a little wider tail. One was just a backup.

3) Talk a little about your heats, which one or ones were your hardest, most fun, ....?

The first round had the best waves. It was really glassy and good lefts all the way down the beach. This event always seems to have some good sized waves pealing off the jetty. I went strait to the final but the repo-charge heat was really hard and I am glad I didnâ€™t have to surf it.

Surfing America prime October 3^rd church beach

5) Do you do NSSA's, WSA's, any others ?

I am doing surfing America prime series, volcom, and a few NSSA

6) Which contests do you like the best and why ?

Surfing America prime because thatâ€™s how u qualify to surf lowers in the USA champs next year.
